Western Today Internship

From September to December of 2021 I was an intern at Western Today, Western Washington University's daily news letter. During this time I took photos of student life around Western and wrote captions for all the photos I took. I also received feedback on my work everyday.

Study

Alyssa Tsukuda

Alyssa Tsukada is an Environmental Science major, from Eagle River, Alaska. She sets up a table in Red Square and is part of the Western’s Sustainability Engagement Institute. Tsukada encourages students to be involved in living a more sustainable life and wants them to pledge to make a difference around Bellingham.

Tobias Cobb, a Public Health major from Everett, staffs the Domestic Violence Awareness Month table in Red Square. Cobbs hands out awareness ribbons and informs students of local resources.

Campus Christian Fellowship Music

Western alumni Kyle Johnson and Zach Welsh sing hymns on Fisher Fountian. They are joined by members of the Campus Christian Fellowship and perform for an hour every Thursday.

My Chadoras, The Rainbow Bridge is a piece that stands in the center of the Western Gallery and features seven of Anida Yoeu Ali’s chadoras.

Heart of Relaxation

Cause and Effect by Do Ho Suh is one of the art pieces that can be found at Western. This sculpture contains over 1,200 resin human-like figures standing on top of one another, exploring the ideas of power and identity.

Adele Houston

Industrial Design major Adele Houston learns how to use a loom. She became interesting in using one after taking a class on Textiles. Houston hopes to tie what she makes into her senior project.

Madeline Parrish

Madeline Parrish studies Psychology in the music library. While she is currently a Computer Science major after taking some time off from School due to COVID, she decided she’d rather study Psychology. Parrish says this is one of her favorite spots to study on campus because of the natural light, nice atmosphere and assortment of plants.

Untitled (Steam Work Bellingham

Untitled (Steam Work Bellingham) by Robert Morris is one of the many sculptures scattered around Western. Untitled lets out steam three times per day, in the morning, afternoon and evening. 

A haunting fog sets in around Western’s campus. Many of the tree tops are bent over due to multiple days of high wind.

Grad Students Carved Pumpkins

Biology themed carved pumpkins sit on the third floor of the biology building. All of these pumpkins were carved by biology graduate students. 

Students study under the 50th anniversary banner for Huxley College of Environmental Science.

Plymouth

A Plymouth 273 V-8 engine is displayed, along with its stats, on the first floor of the Ross Engendering and Technology Building. This engine was donated from the curtesy of Western Washington University Vehicle Research Institute.
